Grey standing seam zinc bay roof with folded hips in Wandsworth

Zinc Roofing for Homes and Extensions

Zinc roofing gives a building a clean, crisp finish that lasts. It is an ideal standing seam material, light enough for most existing structures and flexible enough to follow hips, valleys, curves and steep pitches.

Zinc Roofing Specialists London installs zinc roofs on main roofs, bays, porches, lanterns, dormers and extensions, using natural, pre-weathered and pigmented zinc.

We form the trays and flashings to suit your roof, so every seam lines up and every junction is detailed properly.

Concealed clip fixings, with no screws through the zinc

Pitched, Curved and Low-Pitch Zinc Roofs

Standing seam zinc works on steep pitched roofs, gentle slopes and curved roofs. The seam type and the minimum pitch depend on the system, and we check both against the manufacturer's guidance before work starts.

Around rooflights and lanterns we fold upstands and aprons in the same zinc, so the glazing sits in a neat, watertight surround rather than a patchwork of different materials.

Zinc Roofing Services

Every zinc roof we fit is planned around the building, the finish you want and the way the space below is used. These are the zinc roofing jobs we carry out most often across Putney, Wandsworth and Fulham.

Standing Seam Zinc Roofs

Long zinc trays joined by raised, folded seams, the classic look for main roofs and extensions.

Concealed clips let each tray move with temperature, so the roof stays tight and quiet.

Bay and Porch Roofs

Small roofs show every detail, so we fold hips, ridges and edges by hand to suit each one.

Zinc is an ideal way to replace tired felt or lead on a bay or porch.

Lanterns and Rooflights

We roof around lanterns and rooflights with folded zinc upstands and aprons.

The result is a neat, watertight frame that matches the rest of the roof.

Zinc Shingles

Diamond, scale and rectangular zinc shingles give a textured, tiled finish.

Mixing pigmented and pre-weathered shingles creates a multi-tone roof like the one on our home page.

Curved and Barrel Roofs

Zinc can be curved on site or pre-formed to follow barrel roofs and rounded bays.

Seams follow the curve so the roof keeps a smooth, continuous line.

Re-Roofing and Repairs

We strip and replace failing roofs and repair damaged zinc where a repair is the sensible option.

If a roof is past saving, we will tell you plainly and price a replacement.

Correct Zinc Roof Build-Ups

What sits under the zinc matters as much as the zinc itself. The underside of the metal must stay dry, so every roof needs either a ventilated cold roof or a warm roof with the right structured underlay and vapour control.

We look at your drawings and the use of the room below before recommending a build-up, and we keep zinc away from materials it does not like, such as copper run-off and acidic timbers like oak and cedar.

Zinc Finishes and Colours

Natural zinc starts bright and slowly dulls to a soft blue-grey. Pre-weathered zinc comes in lighter blue-grey and darker graphite tones, so the roof looks settled from the day it is finished.

Pigmented zinc adds muted colours such as greens, reds and browns, and can be mixed for a patterned finish.

We can show you samples of each finish so you can see how it will look against your brick, render or timber before you decide.

Zinc Roofing FAQs

The questions homeowners, architects and builders ask us most often before a zinc roof goes on.

Zinc is light, long lasting and needs very little maintenance. As it weathers it forms its own protective patina, which slows corrosion and heals minor surface scratches. It can be folded into tight details and curves, and it is fully recyclable at the end of its life.

Natural (bright) zinc starts shiny and dulls to a soft blue-grey over time. Pre-weathered zinc comes in lighter blue-grey and darker graphite tones, so the roof looks settled from day one. Pigmented zinc adds subtle colours, which can also be mixed, as on the multi-tone zinc shingle roofs we have installed.

Standing seam uses long trays joined by raised, folded seams and suits most roofs and walls. Flat-lock panels and shingles are smaller pieces with folded edges that lie flat, giving a tiled or scaled look that works well on cladding, lanterns and decorative roofs.

Standing seam zinc is held with concealed clips folded into the seams, so no fixings go through the sheet. A mix of fixed and sliding clips lets each tray expand and contract with temperature without stressing the joints.

Both work with zinc as long as the underside of the metal is kept dry. A ventilated cold roof or a warm roof with the right structured underlay and vapour control are the usual approaches. We look at your drawings and the use of the space below before recommending one.

Care is needed. Water running off copper will stain and attack zinc, and acidic timbers such as oak and western red cedar should not drain onto it or sit against it without separation. We plan the details so these materials do not come into contact.

Yes. We fold bespoke flashings, cappings, verges, drips and gutter linings in the same material and finish as the roof, so every edge and junction matches.

Send us your drawings, photos or a short description through the contact form, or give us a call. We will talk through the job, suggest a suitable system and finish, and arrange a visit if one is needed.
